The Central University of Tamil Nadu was established by an Act of Parliament (no 25 of 2009, 20/03.2009). The University is located at Tiruvarur, headquarters of the District in the heart of the great Chola Empire. Preliminary work on establishing the University has resulted in the tentative identification of about 500 acres of land in two revenue villages (see annexure and map). The Government of Tamil Nadu has assured that a multi-storey building (GF plus three floors) measuring about 55000 plus square feet will be made available for a temporary campus for launching academic programmes and planning for campus development in due course (details of the building annexed). Continuous interaction with the administration both at the district and state level indicates substantial movement in issuance of a formal order in this regard.
As an interim measure the vice chancellor and his single person staff (at a very junior office assistant level) is operating out of two small rooms in the PWD inspection bungalow. Efforts are afoot to locate a small residential building for camp office and temporary accommodation of the vice chancellor. Basic computers and elementary office equipment have been purchased apart from establishing landline and net connectivity for the University.
